چکیده

Using recently measured rates for isotopic variants of the ozone formation reaction , we derive expressions for the enrichment of symmetric and asymmetric and in stratospheric ozone and calculate total enrichments of 123‰ and 107‰ for and , respectively. We compare the calculations with measurements made with the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory far-infrared spectrometer during seven balloon flights which took place between 1989 and 1997. We find that the calculations are in reasonable agreement with the average observed enrichments of ‰ and ‰ for and , respectively, where the errors indicate the estimated accuracy; we also find that our measurements are in agreement with other recent stratospheric and tropospheric measurements. Using our measurements of the enrichment of the asymmetric and symmetric forms of and , we estimate branching ratios of and ! " # for production of the symmetric isotopomer by the reaction of $&% O with and , respectively.

Nitrous oxide (N2O) isotopic composition in the troposphere: instrumentation, observations at Mace Head, Ireland, and regional modeling

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a significant greenhouse gas and main contributor to stratospheric ozone destruction. Surface measurements of N2O mole fractions have been used to attribute source and sink strengths, but large uncertainties remain. Stable isotopic ratios of N2O (here considered NNO, NNO, NNO, relative to the abundant NNO) linked to source and sink isotopic signatures can provide addition...

Nylon production: an unknown source of atmospheric nitrous oxide.

Nitrous oxide in the earth's atmosphere contributes to catalytic stratospheric ozone destruction and is also a greenhouse gas component. A precise budgetary accounting of N(2)O sources has remained elusive, and there is an apparent lack of source identification. One source of N(2)O is as a by-product in the manufacture of nylon, specifically in the preparation of adipic acid. Characterization o...

Stable carbon isotope composition of atmospheric methyl bromide

[1] Methyl bromide (CH3Br) constitutes the largest source of bromine atoms to the stratosphere and plays an important role in stratospheric ozone depletion. However, the CH3Br atmospheric budget remains uncertain. We report the first measurements of stable carbon isotope ratios for atmospheric CH3Br and explore the constraints they provide for the atmospheric budget. The measured dC of CH3Br ra...

Trends and seasonal cycles in the isotopic composition of nitrous oxide since 1940

The atmospheric nitrous oxide mixing ratio has increased by 20% since 1750 (ref. 1). Given that nitrous oxide is both a long-lived greenhouse gas2 and a stratospheric ozonedepleting substance3, this increase is of global concern. However, the magnitude and geographic distribution of nitrous oxide sources, and how they have changed over time, is uncertain4,5. A key unknown is the influence of th...

The 2010 Antarctic ozone hole: Observed reduction in ozone destruction by minor sudden stratospheric warmings

Satellite observations show that the 2010 Antarctic ozone hole is characterized by anomalously small amounts of photochemical ozone destruction (40-60% less than the 2005-2009 average). Observations from the MLS instrument show that this is mainly related to reduced photochemical ozone destruction between 20-25 km altitude. Lower down between 15-20 km the atmospheric chemical composition and ph...
